NEW for April 2024: Share your feedback about opportunities and challenges currently in Thames Park

As part of the City’s process to make improvements in Thames Park, an important first step is to identify opportunities and challenges on the existing site and collect comments from the community.

An opportunity focuses on the possibilities of the site. For example:

what could the space become?
how could the space be repurposed to better serve current needs?
how can we make an improvement to the space to encourage a more positive use on the site?

The project team is also exploring what challenges the site has. These challenges take into account existing conditions on the site and could come in the form of:

existing ecological features, drainage patterns, etc.
a built element, space or observed activity that happens on the site that should be preserved.

As part of the initial stages of this project, City staff have put together a draft list of opportunities and challenges that exist on the site. These are based on public input collected so far, observations from the project team, past reports, and the physical characteristics of the site.

Build on the community spirit of Thames Park and the many functions it houses on a seasonal basis

Explore ways to honour and celebrate one of London’s oldest parks

Enhance existing naturalization areas in the park and propose others

Investigate feasible improvement areas of the existing site, such as areas for hard surface sports courts

Improve on existing pathways, playground, and tennis courts

Investigate incorporating informal, unprogrammed play spaces, such as open grass areas for frisbee, etc.

Make ecological improvements for pollinators

Investigate the process for building and identifying potential locations for sports courts

Investigate expanding park amenities such as a spray pad

Explore reconfiguring the space where existing playground sits, as it is nearing its end of life cycle
