This employee resource group is supported by Senior Leader Scott Mathers, Deputy City Manager of Planning and Economic Development. This group welcomes employees with a wide scope of Asian Heritages, such as South Asian, East Asian, and Southeast Asian. Bi- and multi-racial folks are also welcome, as well as allies.

This group would like to increase awareness of and celebrate multiple Asian cultures by engaging with employees in a variety of ways. If you’re interested in joining this group, please contact Helen Ngu or Lawrence Chen or email asianheritage@london.ca

Asian Heritage Month

Diversity represents one of Canada’s greatest strengths. Over the last two centuries, people have journeyed to Canada from East Asia, Southern Asia, Western, Central and Southeast Asia. These immigrants have been bringing our society a rich cultural heritage representing many languages, ethnicities and religious traditions.

The people of this diverse, vibrant and growing community have contributed to every aspect of life in Canada including arts and science, sport, business, and government.

In December 2001, the Senate of Canada adopted a motion proposed by Senator Vivienne Poy to officially designate May as Asian Heritage Month in Canada. In May 2002, the Government of Canada signed an official declaration to announce May as Asian Heritage Month.

Asian Heritage Month offers all Canadians an opportunity to learn more about the history of Canadians of Asian heritage and to celebrate their contributions to the growth and prosperity of Canada. We strive to ensure that all Canadians have the opportunity to reach their full potential and participate in Canada’s civic life.

It is also an important reminder to come together to combat anti-Asian racism and discrimination in all forms. Thank you to those employees who have recently formed the City’s newest Employee Resource Group – the Asian Heritage ERG, which is dedicated to supporting Asian employees.

The Asian Heritage ERG was formed back in May 2022, primarily in response to the rise of anti-Asian hate and violence during the pandemic.

We now have volunteers putting together events to:

  • Bring awareness to the different Asian cultures.
  • Highlight the presence and contributions of Asians in the Corporation and the City of London as a whole.
  • Provide a voice to Asians of different ethnic backgrounds.
  • Promote inclusion of Asian employees in all service areas within the Corporation of the City of London.

This year, there will be some events hosted by AH ERG such as food sampling and commemoration of Diwali. We hope you can join us in celebrating our diversity and culture.
