About this project

The City of London is upgrading the basketball courts in West Lions Park, located at 20 Granville Street. The existing one and a half basketball courts are being replaced with two full size basketball courts, picnic areas, seating walls, benches and tree planting.

This project is substantially funded by a generous donation from the MLSE Foundation and Toronto Raptors to develop a legacy project in London. In support of Our London Family, the Toronto Raptors and Toronto Maple Leafs Alumni came to London in 2021 to stand against hate. As part of the Raptors’ open practice and Maple Leafs’ Alumni game in London, MLSE and the MLSE Foundation announced their commitment to a legacy project in London to help improve a local basketball court.

The basketball courts’ reopening and community celebration

The MLSE Foundation and Toronto Raptors are partnering with the City of London to celebrate the reopening of the newly designed basketball courts.

Date: Saturday, September 24, 2022

Address: West Lions Park, 20 Granville St, London, ON

Event Time: 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM (Note that this is the duration for the FULL event, and the youth basketball clinic will begin shortly after the courts are reopened)

The event will feature live DJ’s, guest speakers, and giveaways.

This event will also feature a Raptors youth basketball clinic, led by Raptors Sport Clinicians. Youth will have the opportunity to learn from professional clinicians, practice skills, and play on the new court.

Registration for the basketball clinic is now closed.

Youth who did not register for the basketball clinic and hope to still participate might still be accommodated based on availability at the reopening event, but participation in the basketball clinic can not be guaranteed without registration.

The basketball courts' design

Over the past year, the City has been working with the MLSE Foundation and local Muslim communities in developing this project. Improvements to the courts include replacing and upgrading the basketball nets, court surface, and seating nearby. Community barbeques are also being added. The basketball courts will be coloured in tones of purple and green to reflect the colours of Our London Family.
